Carnival in Malta is the largest and most colourful festival at this time of year – an appreciated cocktail of tradition, entertainment, history and transgression in a unique city. Carnival dates back to the Knights of Malta, when anything appears possible by wearing masks and the most colourful of costumes.
This year will probably be the last year to break a 40-yrear-old tradition; where Carnival floats enter through the huge 1960s City Gate of Valletta. This will be replaced by the narrow Renzo Piano entrance.
