Masked revellers swarmed the streets of Valletta as the historic Maltese city launched its annual Carnival.
Good weather made this centuries-old carnival, rooted in the Christian festivities ahead of the fast of Lent, possible as the fragile paper mache floats paraded through the streets of Valletta.
The Maltese Carnival is one of the largest festivals on the island, an appreciated cocktail of tradition, entertainment, history and transgression in a unique city. A festival that attracts foreign and local spectators from around world each year.
